Learn the rules of Canfield Solitaire

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Canfield Solitaire. Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Thirteen reserve cards, four columns, draw-three recyclable stock. Free solo play, no wagering.

Practice beyond the first move

Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round. Refer to the controls when needed.

Your objective

Complete four suited foundations beginning at the dealt base rank and wrapping king to ace. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

How to proceed

  1. Build tableau runs down in alternating colours, wrapping ace to king. Reserve cards refill empty columns automatically.
  2. Select a face-up card and then the destination pile or Empty slot.
  3. Use foundations where available; full Spider or Scorpion runs clear automatically.
  4. Undo reverses a choice. New deal shuffles again.

How your actions work

Click or tap cards and piles. Wide tableaus scroll inside the game; use Undo, Hint and New deal where shown. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

Put the rules into context

With base rank 5, a foundation runs 5 through king, then ace through 4. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

A useful caution

Random deals are not guaranteed solvable. A hint is a legal move, not a winning strategy. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
