THE PLAYBOOK · ZCFYD

Learn your way around Lights Out

Try Lights Out at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Turn every light off. Every supplied starting state is made by valid flips from an all-off board and is therefore solvable. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Something to practise

After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Notice the feedback after each input.

What you need to achieve

Turn every light off. Every supplied starting state is made by valid flips from an all-off board and is therefore solvable. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Making your moves

  1. Select a light or an unlit tile.
  2. The selected tile and its orthogonal neighbours switch state.
  3. Plan flips so that previously cleared rows stay cleared.
  4. Use Undo to try another approach.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Look at the feedback after the action.

An example to follow

Tapping the centre changes five cells. Tapping a corner changes three. Diagonal neighbours are not affected. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Look for the relevant detail.

Pay attention to this rule

An unlit tile can still be tapped; it may be necessary to solve the board. Compare the situation with the worked example. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
